Tolkien famously described The Lord of the Rings is a "fundamentally religious and Catholic work, " yet he insisted his writings were not allegories, and Middle-earth is loved by millions who do not share his religious beliefs.  Tolkien's fiction and his faith are intimately related, though in subtle ways.

Tolkien is well known as a devout Catholic, but what is less well known is that the story of his spiritual life reveals a dramatic tale of hard-won faith, involving sorrow and suffering as well as joys and consolations.  We will reflect on Tolkien's life of faith and how we can learn from him for the enrichment of our own spiritual lives.

Friday, November 1st

                                                      8:30pm    Viewing of Film and searching for Christian signs and symbols


Saturday, November 2nd

                                                     10:00am   Second Talk   "A Hard-Won Faith:  Tolkien's Spiritual Journey"

                                                      12:00pm  Lunch     


Afternoon Schedule:        1:30pm     Third Talk       "He could recapture the glamour of 'the word':  Tolkien and the Bible"

Holly Ordway

Holly Ordway

Holly Ordway is the Cardinal Francis George Professor of Faith and Culture at the the Word on Fire Institute and Visiting Professor of Apologetics at Houston Christian University. She holds a PhD in English from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and is a Subject Editor for the Journal of Inklings Studies.


Her other books include Tales of Faith: A Guide to Sharing the Gospel through Literature, Apologetics and the Christian Imagination: An Integrated Approach to Defending the Faith, and, as editor, As Kingfishers Catch Fire: Selected and Annotated Poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins. She has also contributed chapters on imaginative apologetics, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and the Inklings to volumes such as C.S. Lewis in Poets’ Corner, The Inklings and King Arthur, and C.S. Lewis’s List.
