Fr. Chuck Frederico, SJ was ordained on June 10, 2006 at the
Fordham University Chapel, Bronx, New York, by his Eminence Edward Cardinal
Eagan, Archbishop of New York.
Fr. Frederico was born in Drexel Hill, PA, on January 20,
1972. After graduating from Cardinal O’Hara High School, he attended the
Culinary Institute of America, earning an A.O.S. in occupational studies
(Culinary Arts) in 1991. He worked as a sous-chef and as a maître d’ at several
fine restaurants in the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area while attending Saint
Joseph’s University there. He graduated in 1995 with a bachelor of science
degree in food marketing. He likes to tell people he met the Jesuits in the
spirit at the C.I.A. (the old St. Andrew on Hudson Novitiate, now the Culinary
Institute of America) and in person at St. Joe’s.
Fr. Frederico entered the Society in August 1995, at the new
St. Andrew Hall in Syracuse, NY and pronounced first vows of poverty, chastity,
and obedience in August, 1997. He studied for a Master’s in philosophy and
theology at Fordham University, Bronx, NY. While there he worked at St. Rita’s
Center at Theodore Roosevelt High School tutoring immigrant students primarily
in English and math. He also assisted with the service learning program at
Fordham Prep. For his regency, from 2000-2003, Fr. Frederico taught freshman
algebra and world cultures at Scranton Prep. He also served as chair of the
Principal’s Advisory Committee and as assistant boys’ and girls’ swim coach.
Fr. Frederico received his M.Div. from the Jesuit School of
Theology at Berkeley, CA. While in Berkeley, he also served as assistant
chaplain at Children’s Hospital of Oakland and has taught R.C.I.A. at St. Leo
the Great Parish, also in Oakland.
From July of 2006 to July of 2009, Fr. Frederico worked in Campus
Ministry at Loyola University Maryland. He oversaw the teams for the Kairos to
College Retreat and for the Junior Retreat. In addition to presiding and
preaching regularly at campus liturgies, he trained and supported Eucharistic and
other Liturgical Ministers. He also co-directed the R.C.I.A. Program and served
as faculty advisor to Loyola Alive, the campus pro-life group. Fr. Frederico
was a resident chaplain, where he was much admired for his fine Italian
cuisine. Father Frederico began the Vocation Director’s Job for the Maryland/New
York Provinces of the Society of Jesus in 2009.
He integrated the New England Province into his role in 2010 and then in
2014, the newly created and restructured USA Northeast Province joined his
Maryland responsibilities. Fr. Frederico has overseen Vocation Promotion,
Assessment and Accompaniment for the entire east coast of the USA from Maine to
Georgia. He has also served on the Board
of Trustees of Fordham Prep since 2012 and as the chair of their Governance
Committee since 2014.
